Corporatocracy

Whether you believe in the government and the people controlling the land or not, this land is somewhat being controlled by corporations. There’s nothing we can really do about it, alone, since many people have become pacified in this corporatocracy-created culture and institutions. However, there are ways we can fight against it.

First, a definition, A corporatocracy “is a system of government in which a corporation, group of corporations or entities run by corporations control the direction and governance of a country, either directly or indirectly” (What is). Although, it is said that there are no true corporatocracies in the world today, many will criticize the government for being heavily influenced by corporations.

It is true that many corporations will give money, significant amounts of money, to political candidates and causes in favor of them. “Some people believe that this is one of the hallmarks of a corporatocracy” (What is). If there is corporatocracy happening in the world today, it’s very hard to prove. Others will say that the idea shouldn’t be used “because corporations are primarily conceptual entities that possess no real power” (What is).

However, there are ways to fight against it. The first is to “create the cultural and psychological “building blocks” for democratic movements” (Levine). This basically means that without “collective self-confidence, we do not believe that we can succeed in wrestling away power from our rulers” (Levine). Another way is to think critically about the ugly truths about reality. And finally, we must regain our trust and confidence in the young people today.

It is true that campaigns have the money it needs for the candidates due to corporations giving them money, there is no doubt about that. But, there is some good in that. Seeing that corporations view their candidates and decided whether or not they will believe in their values just like the little people is important for their brand. Truth be told, there is nothing wrong with that in the end. “In a campaign that is more about fundraising than real issues, unchecked corporate power is the elephant in the room. We cannot rely on the candidates to raid the issue-rather, we must raise awareness among Americans” (Resnikoff).

Indeed, the argument here is if corporations should muddle in government issues. “..no one individual or group of individuals should have that much influence over a government” (What is). Many people make up these corporations, but only a handful may speak for them. There is no sure way of dealing with the argument except that it’s there and to acknowledge it.

To conclude, corporatocracy is when a government is controlled by large corporations in dealing with large amounts of money that shouldn’t have any business near government ideas. That’s the argument, anyways. We should talk and educate ourselves more on this argument because this could be the real future for our children or grandchildren. Therefore, we should put our trust in the younger generation instead of pushing them down.
